Back in August 1994 George Hollywood, then aged only eighteen, saw a gap in the market and set up Georgie Porgies Puddings. His aim was to make Round Traditional Christmas steamed puddings, using knowledge and experience of the food industry gained from his part-time school job working at a chutney factory.
For the first three years the business was strictly seasonal and George financed himself by continuing to work at the chutney factory. By 1997 George had built up a loyal customer base, which prompted him to apply for a Princes Youth Business Trust loan to create year round demand for his puddings. The loan was awarded alongside a Live Wire award for an outstanding new business.
George relocated the business to new premises in Ottery St Mary and creating a new product, The Cider and Apple steamed pudding. George launched this pudding with a promotion organized by the local tourist board to celebrate St Georges Day. This was a great success and resulted in 1000 puddings being sold throughout Devon's tourist information centres and a pudding being sent to the Queen.
Following this rise in the profile of the businesses, George received further support from the Princes Youth Business Trust and launched the Orange and Cointreau pudding for the new Millennium. By Christmas 1999 George was producing 10,000 Christmas pudding each season and enjoying year round sales with his other puddings. The year 2001 saw the addition of steamed sponges to his product list and his next project is a range of suet crust pastry puddings.
Today Georgie Porgies Puddings are sold up and down the country in farm shops and delicatessens and George is looking to create new products to add to his pudding range.
